Windows End of Support

Written by Jason Handcock | Jul 8, 2022 7:00:00 AM

Technology doesn’t stand still, and operating systems are no exception. Every product Microsoft releases has a defined lifecycle, which means that every version of Windows will reach an end of support. When this happens, updates will stop being released, and security becomes a risk.

With Windows 7 being the last major operating system to be affected by end of support back in 2020, we now find ourselves with Windows 10 reaching the end of its support on 14th October 2025.

What Does “End of Support” Really Mean?

When Microsoft ends support for an operating system, several important things happen:

⚠️ Security updates and patches stop being released to protect against new threats.

⚠️ Bug fixes and feature updates cease.

⚠️ Technical support is no longer provided by Microsoft.

Your computers will continue to run; however, they will be more vulnerable to security risks, software incompatibilities, and potential downtime. This is particularly important for healthcare providers, such as dental practices, where data security and service continuity are critical.

Reduce the Impact of End of Support with Cloud Software

While operating system (OS) lifecycles will always exist, practices using cloud-based software face fewer challenges posed by end-of-support.

Traditional server-based systems, like EXACT, can make operating system upgrades feel like a major project: testing software compatibility, ensuring hardware is capable, and sometimes replacing equipment altogether. In contrast, cloud practice management software removes much of this complexity.

Key Benefits of Cloud Software During Operating System Upgrades

💻 Access from any device: If your computer needs to be upgraded or replaced, simply log into your PMS from any device – No complicated migration process required, or network connectivity issues.

⛓️‍💥 Reduced hardware dependency: Your practice isn’t tied to a specific operating system (Apple Macs included) – Making upgrades easier, quicker, and less disruptive.

✅ Business continuity: Even during upgrades or replacements, your team can continue working securely from other devices.

🚀 Automatic updates: Cloud software handles updates centrally, meaning you always benefit from the latest features and security patches without managing the process yourself.

☁️ Futureproofing: Moving to the cloud reduces the reliance on server computers and fixed hardware, helping you avoid being caught out by deadlines such as Windows 10’s end of support.

Planning Beyond Windows 10

Upgrading your operating systems ahead of an end-of-support date is essential and presents you with the opportunity to think longer term.

By considering a move to cloud-based practice management software, you can simplify future transitions, keep your systems secure, and focus on what matters most; providing excellent patient care.

What Your Practice Should Do Now

📝 Audit your systems: Identify all devices still running Windows 10 (or earlier).

✅ Check for upgrade readiness: Confirm whether your computers meet the requirements for Windows 11. If not, consider budgeting for replacements.

🗓️ Plan upgrades: Avoid last-minute disruption by setting a clear timeline well before support ends.

🧪 Test compatibility: Make sure your practice management software, imaging tools, and other applications work seamlessly on Windows 11.

📞 Engage your IT provider: If you’re unsure about your setup, seek advice and support now to avoid risks later.

Transitioning from one operating system to another can be challenging for a practice to prepare for, especially when you’re trying to limit downtime. Planning ahead can simplify the process and reduce issues; however, there are more options available to you.
